Public and Private Sector Join to Build Pharmacy Research Center at University of Manitoba

Following the lead of universities across North America (reference: 2007 Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry Forecast), the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Manitoba) is increasing its life science infrastructure. As part of that initiative, the school has started construction at its Bannatyne Campus on the new Apotex Centre for the School of Pharmacy. The building was named in honor of Canadian pharmaceutical company Apotex, Incorporated (Weston, Ontario) and its $3 million contribution to the $17 million project cost.

The four-story, 95,000 square-foot building will nearly double the existing space available to pharmacy students. The new facility will include advanced lecture theatres, an undergraduate teaching laboratory with bench space for 75 students, a manufacturing lab designed to provide hands-on experience in aseptic formulation and small-scale manufacturing techniques. Other features include a pharmaceutical care lab, which will house a simulated dispensary system, patient counseling area and comprehensive research areas.

Apotex, which maintains a large pharmaceutical R&D operation in Winnipeg, employs approximately 5,000 employees throughout Canada at its ten manufacturing and/or research sites. The company invested in the project in support of the educational goals of the school and its importance to the pharmaceutical industry. Construction on the project began earlier this year and is expected to be complete in 2008.
