Qatar to Pre Qualify Bidders for 2,400-Megawatt Power and Desalination Plant

Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Qatar is experiencing feverish construction activity and project planning in anticipation of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2022. According to Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), electricity demand will increase 10% annually over the next five years.

Qatar is the world's largest exporter of LNG and a global major in the export of crude oil. It is also one of the world's largest energy and water consumers per capita.

The massive demand for power drove the recent decision to pre-qualify bidders for the tender to build Qatar's next independent water and power project (IWPP), which is scheduled to deliver its first power output in late 2016. Kahramaa said that the plant will have a power generation capacity of 2,400 megawatts and a water desalination capacity of 30 million gallons a day.

The country is aiming to refine its water and energy efficiency strategy with the hosting of a conference in the second week of December in the capital Doha. The conference will feature international experts and industry stakeholders, and will showcase the country's efforts to adopt technologies and industry best practices to maximize the efficiency and sustainability of its power. It also will offer details on planned energy/water projects and resources.

The conference will present information on project opportunities that will arise as the government begins awarding contracts. Experts will provide insights on how to improve energy and water consumption costs for businesses and the operational efficiency of oil and gas production processes.
