Questar Pipeline Company Plans a New Natural Gas Pipeline in the Rocky Mountains

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Questar Pipeline Company (Salt Lake City, Utah), a subsidiary of Questar Corporation (Questar) (NYSE: STR) (Salt Lake City, Utah), is planning to construct a new pipeline to export expanding natural gas capacity from the Piceance Basin in Colorado. In the proposed Piceance to Kanda/Coleman Expansion Project, Questar plans to construct 170 miles of 24" diameter natural gas transmission pipeline from Greasewood, Colorado, to interconnect with its existing Kanda compressor station in Wyoming.

The new pipeline would have a transmission capacity of between 300 - 450 mmscfd of natural gas and would serve as a bridge between the Piceance Basin producers and Northwest Pipeline, Kern River, TransColorado, and the mid-continent pipelines of Wyoming Interstate Gas, Colorado Interstate Gas, Southern Star, and Questar Pipeline. Depending on what the final capacity is determined to be, the compression needed to support such an expansion would vary between 7,000 and 52,000 horsepower. Greasewood and Kanda compressor stations could get unit additions, as well as a new compressor station, which would be constructed at the mid-point of the proposed pipeline. Again, it all depends on the capacity of the pipeline.

Questar expects to refine the scope of the pipeline and file with the FERC by the end of 2004. Construction on the $200 million project could begin as early as the Spring of 2006, with a completion date targeted for late Fall of 2006. In a non-related expansion project, Questar has filed with the FERC for its South System Expansion Project and was assigned docket number PF04-6-000.
