Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--EOLE-RES SA (Avignon, France), the French subsidiary of Renewable Energy Systems (RES) (Hertfordshire, United Kingdom), recently inaugurated a 50-megawatt (MW) windfarm in Pays de St. Seine in France. With the commissioning of the project, RES' total installed wind energy capacity exceeds 4 gigawatts (GW), including capacities of construction and development ventures undertaken by the group's subsidiaries to date.
The Pays de St. Seine windfarm is located about 30 kilometers from Dijon in the Bourgogne region of Cote d'Or. It comprises 25 turbines installed across four municipal areas -- Saint Martin du Mont, Bligny le Sec, Villotte Saint Seine, and Turcey. Each of the V90 turbines, supplied by Vestas Wind Systems (CPH:VWS) (Randers, Denmark), has a blade length of 130 meters and a power generation capacity of 2 MW. The project is capable of handling the annual energy requirements of about 48,000 residents. EOLE-RES has completed 14 projects in France, with a combined power generation capacity of 300 MW. The projects generate about 800 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, catering to the requirements of 320,000 residents. To date, these ventures have saved 233.500 tons per annum of potential carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the region. The firm has several projects in the pipeline with a potential capacity of about 2 GW, including 150 MW of ongoing solar power ventures. There are eight windfarms presently under development across France, with a combined capacity of 232 MW.
The successful completion of the Pays de St. Seine windfarm project has made RES a leading player to contend with in the Mediterranean renewable energy sector. Ever since its first venture in 1992 at Carland Cross in Cornwall, United Kingdom, the firm has taken 17 years and 79 ventures worldwide to reach the 4-GW milestone, providing power to 2.2 million average consumers. It took the firm 14 years to reach the 1-GW milestone, while the additional 3 GW of power generating capacity was added in the following three years. The firm's most recent project in the U.K. is the 194-MW Lynn and Inner Dowsing offshore windfarm. The farm built for Centrica Plc (LSE:CNA) (Windsor, United Kingdom) is currently the largest offshore farm in the world.
The 4-GW landmark has been achieved through 2,639 turbines of varied capacities, ranging from the 3.6-MW giants at Lynn and Inner Dowsing to the smallest 225-kilowatt model functioning at RES' headquarters in Hertfordshire. These projects cater to the electricity requirements of 2.2 million consumers and have resulted in annual savings of 4.4 million tons of CO2 emissions to date.
RES, which has a footprint in all the major international clean energy markets, is looking to make a significant contribution in shifting the energy mix of the U.K. from brown to green over the next few years.
