Rock-Tenn Invests More than $300 Million at Smurfit-Stone Legacy Mills

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Rock-Tenn (NYSE:RKT) (Norcross, Georgia), a leading manufacturer of corrugated and consumer packaging solutions, is forging ahead with plans to invest in modernizations and improvements at containerboard mills that were acquired recently from Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation (SSCC). Rock-Tenn acquired 14 mills and a number of converting plants and recycling facilities last May in a merger transaction valued at approximately $3.5 billion. Industrial Info has identified 30 major capital and maintenance projects that are in the planning and engineering phase and range in value from $1.5 million to $60 million.

Planned expenditures include paper machine rebuilds and upgrades, the rebuilding of a woodyard at a mill in the Carolinas, batch digester replacements, and more than a dozen projects to upgrade power and recovery boilers, plus the addition of three new package boilers at mills in New York and Alabama. Project schedules call for projects that will kick off as early as September 2012 to as late as February 2014.

One of the largest projects on record calls for the replacement of an electrostatic precipitator at a mill in Quebec that will commence at the end of 2013 and be completed in early 2014.

Legacy Smurfit Stone mills are located in Coshocton, Ohio; Florence, South Carolina; Hodge, Louisiana; Hopewell, Virginia; LaTuque, Quebec; Syracuse, New York; Saint Paul, Minnesota; Stevenson, Alabama; Uncasville, Connecticut; West Point, Virginia; and several locations in Florida, including Fernandina Beach, Panama City and two mills in Jacksonville.
