Rooms to Go Begins Site Preparation on $85 Million Furniture Distribution Center Planned for Louisiana

Plans are to construct an 847,000-square-foot regional distribution center to support regional retail operations. Site preparation began this month with foundation and structural steel work expected to start within the next month or two. Overall completion is slated for fall 2009. The center will replace a warehouse in Mobile, Alabama. It also follows the company's acquisition of Rhodes Furniture Store, which is currently bankrupt.

Original plans for a new distribution center were announced in summer 2007 for a regional distribution center to be located in Slidell, Louisiana, as part of the company's plans to open nine new stores within the next two to three years near or surrounding the Gulf Coast of Florida, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. These plans were later changed when the company chose Pearl River instead of Slidell.

Horton, Harley & Carter Incorporated (Tampa, Florida) was selected around the beginning of the year to provide design services for the new center, and White-Spunner Construction Incorporated (Mobile) was selected to provide general construction services. Bids are still being accepted for mechanical subcontractors as well as other trades.
