Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - Flamboyant billionaire Donald Trump has lost his fight in the Scottish courts to block the construction of an offshore wind testing centre which he claimed would blight the view from his planned luxury golf course complex at Menie in Aberdeenshire.

The decision is good news for the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC), which will be Europe's largest planned testing centre for next generation offshore turbines. It will have 11 turbines erected and connected to the grid. Located between 2 kilometers (km) and 4.5km from the coast of Aberdeen, they will have a combined generating capacity of up to 100-megawatts (MW) and produce enough power for approximately 49,000 homes. The project is expected to cost in excess of €270 million ($350 million) to complete.

Trump took his battle to the Scottish courts last November, after the Scottish government approved the project in March. For additional information, see November 15, 2013, article - Donald Trump Fights Scottish Windfarm.

Swedish energy company, Vattenfall AB (Stockholm, Sweden), is constructing the centre with the aid of Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG) and Technip. Vattenfall reduced its stake in the operation last May. For additional information, see May 14, 2013, article - Vattenfall 'Shrinks' Share in European Offshore Test Centre.

"The project underwent a thorough examination and extensive consultation to gain consent and the decision-making process has been scrutinised by the Court of Session," explained EOWDC project spokesperson, Iain Todd, after the court's decision. "The EOWDC is widely accepted as a much-needed centre of significant European importance with a pivotal role to play in helping the Scottish and U.K. Governments meet their ambitious renewable energy targets. It will also help new entrants into the market and accelerate the development of an efficient, cost effective and technologically-advanced offshore wind sector to support the security of our national energy supply."

Trump said that the court's decision means that he will abandon the Menie project, which would have seen the construction of a massive hotel, golf and housing development on Menie Estate -- worth €895 million ($1.17 billion). Instead, his organisation announced that it has just purchased the Doonbeg Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland.

Trump stated: "We will appeal this decision and in the meantime we will be focusing all of our investment and energy towards our new acquisition on the Atlantic Ocean in Ireland."
