SEPTA to Spend $235 Million on New Electrical Substations to Support Commuter and Light Rail Operations

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is in the early stages of a $235 million program aimed at the replacement of sixteen electrical substations that support their commuter and light rail operations.

Over a period of 15 years, SEPTA will replace the substations, most of which have been in service since the 1920’s or 1930’s, with new grassroot substations that will be capable of handling the electricity load required by their wide spread commuter rail and light rail operations. In recent years, the number of problems related to these antiquated substations has been increasing exponentially, mandating that SEPTA take measures to fix these problems in a more permanent manner. The new substations will place SEPTA in position to continue with expansion plans for both commuter rail and light rail systems, ensuring they have the necessary power to add more tracks, stations and trains.

The first two substations that are scheduled to be replaced are the Callowhill Station, replaced by the proposed Fairmont Avenue substation, and the 30th Street switching station, which will be replaced by the proposed Powelton Avenue substation. The combined cost of these two new substations will be $45 million.

Both of the proposed substations are currently in the design phase and SEPTA expects to select general contractors for each substation in mid 2006. Actual construction is anticipated to begin in the summer of 2007, with the new stations coming online in early 2008.
