Solar and Semiconductors Sparking Mega-Project Development in Maricopa County, Arizona

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Maricopa County, Arizona, is one of the nation's leading counties for industrial project spending and currently has 15 projects totaling $3.46 billion that have already begun construction or are scheduled to begin construction in 2009. Solar power generation, semiconductor manufacturing and light-rail projects are garnering the majority of the capital project dollars this year and next. In addition to the project work in 2009, 24 projects totaling about $5 billion are scheduled to begin construction in 2010 and beyond, making Maricopa County one of the leading counties in the nation for industrial project development.

Earlier this year, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) (Santa Clara, California) began construction of a $3 billion upgrade of its semiconductor wafer fab 32 in Chandler, Arizona. IDC (Tempe, Arizona) is providing engineering services for the project, and Hoffman Construction Company (Portland, Oregon) is the construction contractor.

At least two companies are planning multi-billion dollar projects to develop solar power generation in Arizona. In one of the largest solar projects in the world, Abengoa Solar U.S. (Lakewood, Colorado) hopes to begin construction next year of the 280-megawatt Solana Solar Generating Station, which will be located near Gila Bend, Arizona. The $1 billion project will take advantage of Arizona's solar resources, utilizing concentrating solar technology with parabolic trough collectors spread out over 1,900 acres in Maricopa County.
