Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--South Africa is committed to deploying 5 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable-energy capacity every year to meet its climate and energy goals by 2030, according to Kgosientso Ramokgopa, the nation's minister of electricity and energy. South Africa also aims to reduce its dependence on aging coal plants and to address ongoing energy shortages.
Authorities have developed a timeline to procure more electricity, including multiple bid windows under South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). They expect the plan to help stabilize the country's grid, which has been burdened by persistent load-shedding.
The annual 5-GW rollout is aligned with the South African Renewable Energy Masterplan (SAREM), which aims to add 29.5 GW of new capacity by 2030, including 14.4 GW of wind and 6 GW of solar power installations. However, achieving this vision will require significant investments in transmission infrastructure to manage the surge in renewable projects and ensure efficient integration into the national grid.
Industrial Info is tracking more than 385 active and proposed wind and solar projects across South Africa, totaling more than US$57 billion of investment.
