SRP Completes Construction of $350 Million Combined-Cycle Power Plant Addition in Arizona

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District (SRP) (Tempe, Arizona) has completed construction and is in start-up testing of the $350 million, 825-megawatt combined-cycle unit addition at the Santan Generating Station, located in Gilbert, Maricopa County, Arizona.

Construction for the project started June 2003 and was completed in late November 2004. SRP anticipates full commercial operation for the project to commence in June 2005. The project consisted of adding two more power islands to the plant. The first power island will operate in a 2-on-1 combined cycle configuration utilizing two dual-fueled 170-megawatt GE Power Systems MS7001FA PG7241 (FA) combustion turbine generators, two Alstom Power Incorporated duct-fired heat recovery steam generators, and a condensing GE Power Systems D11 steam turbine generator.

Guth Lighting The second power island will utilize identical equipment, but will operate as a 1-on-1 combined cycle. State-of-the art air emissions-reduction technology including selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for the reduction of NOx emissions and the use of catalytic oxidation for the control of CO emissions will also be utilized. Once operational the new additions will add a total of 825-megawatts to the plant bring the nameplate capacity to 1,125-Megawatts.

Sargent & Lundy LLC, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, performed the engineering services for the project. The Industrial Company (TIC) based in Steamboat, Colorado, was the general contractor for the project.
