Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Last November, Sumitomo Corporation (TYO:8053) (Tokyo, Japan) announced that it would work with the Khanh Hoa Department of Planning and Investment (Ninh Hoa, Vietnam) on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) electric power generation project in south-central Vietnam. Sumitomo signed a memorandum of understanding with the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade in January of last year, after the ministry chose Sumitomo for the BOT energy project. Under the BOT agreement, Sumitomo will build a coal-fired plant near Ninh Hoa, Vietnam, on the My Giang hamlet facing the South China Sea. Ninh Hoa is located in the Khanh Hoa province, approximately 1,100 kilometers from Hanoi.
Sumitomo plans to conclude preliminary design by the end of this month. The company will release requests for quotation and bid documents for a turnkey contractor and other specialty contractors from November until the beginning of next year.
Construction of the Van Phong-Khanh Hoa power station is scheduled to commence in June 2011 and is expected to conclude in the fall of 2016.
The plant will be Vietnam's largest supercritical coal-fired plant and will have an estimated generation capacity of 2,640 megawatts (MW), achieved through four 660-MW circulating fluidized bed boilers, which will power steam turbine-generator sets. These generator sets will be connected to the Vietnamese grid via auxiliary equipment to supply the local area with electricity. Under the BOT contract, Sumitomo has agreed to supply electricity to the grid for 25 years and plans to import coal from Australia.
