Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The three main Swiss energy utilities recently presented applications for the construction of three nuclear power stations in Switzerland. The plants will have energy outputs of 1,600 megawatts (MW) each and are scheduled to be operational by 2025.
Alpiq Holding AG (Olten, Switzerland) already owns and operates the Goesgen nuclear power station in the Solothurn canton. The 1,020-MW plant is equipped with one steam turbine and began operations in 1979. Alpiq Holding AG plans to construct a new nuclear plant in the immediate vicinity. Nuclear Power Plant Niederamt Limited (Olten) is responsible for the project management and for attaining the required construction and operating licences for the new nuclear power plant.
Axpo Holding AG (Zurich, Switzerland) and BKW FMB Energie AG (Bern, Switzerland) have formed a joint venture, Resun AG (Aarau, Switzerland), to develop the two other nuclear projects. Axpo owns the Beznau nuclear power plant, which will be decommissioned in 2020. The 730-MW power station in the Aargau canton, which has been operational since 1969, will be replaced by Beznau II (1,600 MW) in 2025. BKW FMB Energie AG owns the 390-MW Muehleberg nuclear power station in the Bern canton. Decommissioning of this facility is expected to occur in 2020. Meanwhile, the company is advancing with plans to construct the 1,600-MW Muehleberg II facility.
Resun AG has drawn up two applications for two identical power stations at the Beznau and Muehleberg sites. At the same time, Nuclear Power Plant Niederamt submitted an application for the Niederamt nuclear power station. The Swiss government's department of energy now has to decide on the three framework approval applications, each worth $6 billion.
The entire process, from the submission of a framework approval application to the commissioning of a nuclear facility, will take about 14 years.
