Tampa Electric Begins Construction of 240-Megawatt Peaking Project at Bayside Power Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tampa Electric Company, a subsidiary of TECO Energy Incorporated (NYSE:TE) (Tampa, Florida), has started construction of a $190 million, 240-megawatt (MW) expansion project at the H. L. Culbreath Bayside Power Station in Tampa.

Construction began in November, and the project is scheduled to begin full commercial operation by fall 2009. The project will consist of installing four dual fuel 60-MW Pratt & Whitney FT8 SWIFTPAC combustion turbine generators to the existing facility. Once completed, the new turbines will operate in a simple-cycle peaking configuration, generating power when energy demands are at their highest, during the summer and winter months.

AMEC Earth and Environmental (Tucker, Georgia), a division of AMEC plc (LSE:AMEC) (London, England), will provide the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services for the duration of the project.
