Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 200,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Lindsey Oil Refinery in Grimsby, England, soon will have its HDS-3 Diesel Hydrotreater and associated units running. The plant is owned by Total SA (NYSE:TOT) (Paris, France) and operated by subsidiary Total UK Limited (Hertfordshire, England).
In 2007, Total launched a 300 million-euro refinery expansion program to increase its high-sulphur crude processing capacity. The expansion includes the construction of a diesel hydrotreater unit, a sulphur recovery unit, a sour water stripper and a steam-methane reformer hydrogen unit (SMR) that will increase the refinery's capacity of producing low-sulphur diesel.
The units are scheduled to be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2009, and they are expected to become operational in the the first quarter of 2010.
The contract for the expansion was awarded to Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:JEC) (Pasadena, California). Additional work for the project was awarded to Italian construction company IREM SpA (Borgone, Italy).
In January 2009, nearly 800 local Lindsey workers went on strike to protest against the appointment of IREM. More than 900 workers from the refinery were fired in June. After attracting considerable media attention for nearly six months, the dispute was resolved on June 29, 2009, when the local workers were allowed to return to work.
