Total Planning Maintenance Turnarounds at its French Gonfreville Refinery

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Total S.A. (NYSE:TOT) (Paris, France), has scheduled maintenance turnarounds for the company's 364,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Gonfreville refinery to take place during the third quarter of 2010 and the third quarter of 2011.

The Gonfreville refinery is the largest of the six Total refineries in France. Located in the city of Gonfreville, in the Haute Normandie region, the refinery produces a wide range of products such as gas; liquefied petroleum gas; naphtha; kerosene and fuel; solvent; bitumen; and lubricants.

The turnaround, which will entail mainly cleaning and inspection, will involve three units related to one of the distillation areas of the refinery: the 57,200-BBL/d continuous catalytic reformer; the 14,500-BBL/d reformate splitter, known as the FDR; and a gas-oil hydrodesulfurization unit, known as DGO2. The turnaround is scheduled to start at the beginning of September, and units are expected to be offline for approximately 45 non-production days.

Separately, in the fall of 2011, a major maintenance shutdown is scheduled to take place in the recently created Deep Conversion 3 Area, affecting its five units: the 1,568-BBL/d steam methane reformer (SMR); the 62,694-BBL/d hydrocracker (HDC); two 1,458-BBL/d sulphur recovery units (Claus 3 and 4); and a tail-gas treatment (sulfrime) unit. The turnaround is scheduled to keep units out of production for 45 days.
