Tri-State Biodiesel Begins Expansion of Connecticut Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tri-State Biodiesel LLC (New York) has begun expanding its biodiesel plant in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Tri-State, which purchased the plant in 2013, plans to increase its capacity from 3 million gallons per year to 10 million gallons. The expansion will allow the plant to process brown grease, in addition to the yellow grease that the company currently collects from clients in Fairfield County. It will be the first facility on the East Coast to process brown grease, which is classified as a grease-trap oil that is mixed with other grease-trap drain waste.

The company is constructing a 12,000-square-foot building addition and will add a transesterification reaction train that will triple production capacity. With the additional capacity, a new 5 million-gallon tank farm will be erected to store the additional biodiesel.

The estimated $4 million expansion also will increase employees at the plant from seven to 25. Completion of the project is expected in June.

The company also operates a 3 million-gallon-per-year waste-oil biodiesel production facility in Bronx, New York. When the Bridgeport expansion is completed, it will have the capacity to produce 13 million gallons of biodiesel annually.
