Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has now entered the final phase of construction on a new $120 million Genetic Medicine Building. When complete in 2007, the 331,000 square-foot building will be one of the schools largest. A formal groundbreaking ceremony was held in February 2005 to kick off the project, which is just one of many being built on the busy campus.
The seven-story structure will contain five laboratory floors and will house researchers from pharmacy and three medical school departments: pharmacology, genetics, and biochemistry and biophysics. The building was designed to promote interdisciplinary research and will afford a flexible open quality to all of the laboratories. This style encourages active cooperation between researchers. On a practical note, the open design also simplifies any future modifications and will allow the labs to be easily modified. Hunt Construction and Choate Construction are also members of the project team.
