UNC Chapel Hill Begins Final Construction Phase of $120 Million Genetics Research Building

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has now entered the final phase of construction on a new $120 million Genetic Medicine Building. When complete in 2007, the 331,000 square-foot building will be one of the school’s largest. A formal groundbreaking ceremony was held in February 2005 to kick off the project, which is just one of many being built on the busy campus.

The new research building is located east of the existing EPA building in the designated campus research block, and will serve the research needs for both the Schools of Medicine and Pharmacy. As reported by Industrial Info Resources (reference: Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database), the design team was led by Lord, Aeck and Sargent (Atlanta, Georgia). Morrisville-based Stewart Engineering and Mid-Atlantic Infrastructure Systems (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) were also on board for the design and engineering of the project.

The seven-story structure will contain five laboratory floors and will house researchers from pharmacy and three medical school departments: pharmacology, genetics, and biochemistry and biophysics. The building was designed to promote interdisciplinary research and will afford a flexible open quality to all of the laboratories. This style encourages active cooperation between researchers. On a practical note, the open design also simplifies any future modifications and will allow the labs to be easily modified. Hunt Construction and Choate Construction are also members of the project team.
