Union Gas Begins Construction on $150 Million Dawn to Trafalgar Pipeline System Expansion

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Union Gas (Chatham, Ontario), a subsidiary of Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina), has commenced construction of a 35 kilometer, 48” diameter pipeline segment on its Dawn to Trafalgar Ontario pipeline system. Construction on the pipeline segment began during the first week of June 2006, and constitutes a portion of the $150 million Trafalgar Facilities Expansion Program phase I. Union Gas awarded the engineering and construction management contract for the new pipeline segment to Banister Pipelines (Edmonton, Alberta).

The other portion of the Trafalgar Facilities Expansion Program involves the construction of new compression facilities at Union Gas’s Dawn compressor station, located near Dresden, Ontario. Union Gas had previously awarded Aecon Industrial (Cambridge, Ontario) an engineering and construction management contract for the installation of two new 10,350 horsepower Solar Taurus T-70 turbine compressor packages at the Dawn station. The new compressor additions will constitute Plant F at the compressor station. The site preparation for the compressor station work began in the late fourth quarter 2005, and main construction activities at the compressor station began in the spring of 2006.

Union Gas expects to have both the pipeline and compressor station portions of the Trafalgar Facilities Expansion Program phase I completed in November 2006. Once completed, the expansion will increase the natural gas pipeline system capacity to nearly 5.5 billion cubic feet per day.
