Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Following the completion of first startup test on February 6, 2013, the first unit of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation's (CGNPC) (Shenzhen, Guangdong) Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Station was connected to the grid and began operations on February 17, 2013. This means that the first nuclear power station in northeast China has started its online commissioning stage, according to an announcement from the CGNPC on February 18, 2013.
The power station is located in Hongyanhe Town, Wafangdian City of Northeast China's Liaoning province, which is about 110 kilometers from Dalian City and 270 kilometers from Shenyang, the capital city of Liaoning. The power station is the first nuclear power project to begin construction during China's 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-10) and the largest energy investment project in northeast China.
Liaoning Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Company Limited (Dalian, Liaoning), a joint venture of the CGNPC (45%), CPI Nuclear Power Company Limited (Beijing) (45%) and Dalian Construction and Investment Corporation (Dalian, Liaoning) (10%), is responsible for the development and future operations of the project. China Nuclear Power Engineering Company Limited (Shenzhen) is serving as the general contractor for the project. China Nuclear Industry 23 Construction Company Limited (CNI23) (Beijing) is serving as the installation contractor for the project. Major equipment is coming from Chinese suppliers such as Shanghai Electric Corporation (Shanghai), mainly responsible for equipment in the nuclear island, and Dongfang Electric Corporation (Chengdu, Sichuan), mainly responsible for equipment in the conventional island.
According to plans, the power station will be furnished with six 1,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power units in two phases. Construction of Unit 1 officially started on August 18, 2007. According to the schedule, all four units in Phase I will begin operations by the end of 2015. Upon completion, the power station will be able to generate 30 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity every year, which accounts for about 16% of the total power consumption of the Liaoning province in 2012.
