Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The most recent forecasts show the U.S. East Coast would be spared the worst, with hurricanes Jose and Maria likely to stay far from shore as they continue their northward trajectories. That's a big relief for the New England and U.S. Northeast regions, where Industrial Info is tracking nearly $11.5 billion in active projects that are set to begin construction in in the fourth quarter.
Transportation projects make up nearly one-third of the total investment value (TIV) of projects slated to begin construction in the fourth quarter. Massachusetts is home to one of the largest: Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's $449 million extension of the Green Line commuter rail in Canton. But the 3.2-mile addition may have hit a snag after developers recently dropped CH2M Hill Companies (Englewood, Colorado) as a contractor, citing a potential conflict of interest, according to The Boston Globe. Nonetheless, state officials do not believe the change will affect the project's schedule. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
New Jersey Transit Corporation (Newark, New Jersey) is planning $184 million in improvements at the County Yard rail yard in New Jersey, including multiple storage tracks and a service and inspection facility. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Natural gas-fired power projects follow transportation as the second-largest project type by TIV. Two natural gas-fired power projects account for more than 10% of the TIV: Itochu Corporation's (Tokyo, Japan) $950 million Hickory Run Energy Station in New Castle, Pennsylvania, and NRG Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NRG) (Houston, Texas) $320 million Canal Power Station in Sandwich, Massachusetts. The natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) Hickory Run project has a nominal generating capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW) and is expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report and August 28, 2017, article - Tyr Energy Begins Construction on Pennsylvania Natural Gas-fired Power Plant.
The Canal Power Station would generate 330 MW from a General Electric (NYSE:GE) dual-fuel combustion turbine. The project is set to be complete in late 2019, but could face delays after the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) recently appealed a decision from the Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board that unanimously approved the facility, according to The Sandwich Enterprise. The CLF is concerned the Canal Power Station will keep the state from meeting its emission-cutting goals established by the Massachusetts Global Warming Solutions Act. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Among other sectors, Pharmaceutical & Biotech and Food & Beverage have strong showings in projected fourth-quarter kickoffs, with New York home to two such projects. Luitpold Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (Shirley, New York), a subsidiary of Daiichi Sankyo Company Limited (Tokyo), is progressing on its $50 million contract-manufacturing facility in Shirley, which would add 70,000 square feet and additional facilities for more flexible production of injectables and other liquids, as well as space for research, development and warehousing. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Clearwater Organic Farms LLC (Rochester, New York) is nearing construction on a $50 million hydroponic spinach greenhouse in Rochester, which would grow and process 5.75 million pounds per year of organic baby spinach. It is expected to be completed next summer. A proposed, $50 million second phase would kick off in 2020 and double the production. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Phase I and the proposed Phase II.
