As the world turns to shopping from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, e-commerce has ballooned, and two of the names synonymous with online shopping and package delivery, Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) and United Parcel Service (NYSE:UPS) (UPS) (Sandy Springs, Georgia), have planned projects in the area. Amazon will be building a grassroot warehouse and distribution center in Forsyth, Georgia. The 219,000-square-foot building will support operations for the North Atlanta region. Construction is set to be completed by the fourth quarter of this year. See project report. Amazon also will be constructing an approximately 125,000-square-foot last-mile distribution center in Saint Augustine, Florida, featuring 305 truck spaces and six truck and trailer loading docks. Construction is expected to be completed before the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Ridgeland, Mississippi, on the northern outskirts of Jackson, UPS will construct a last-mile delivery point, which will fulfill orders for Madison County from the company's Jackson distribution center. The facility will be able to accommodate a fleet of 105 package delivery vehicles. The $28.6 million project is expected to be completed in the first half of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

A couple of projects involving the manufacturing of aircraft and aircraft parts also are in the works for the region. Aerion Supersonic LLC (Reno, Nevada) will construct new headquarters and a manufacturing facility at the Orlando Melbourne International Airport in Melbourne, Florida, to produce its AS2 supersonic business jet. The Haskell Company (Jacksonville, Florida) is providing architectural and engineering services on the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

General Atomics Incorporated (San Diego, California) plans to expand its aircraft launching systems manufacturing plant in Shannon, Mississippi, near Tupelo. A 100,000-square-foot highly specialized manufacturing building addition will be added to the existing 652,000-square-foot manufacturing facility to accommodate the addition of three national security components and technology manufacturing projects for the U.S. Department of Defense. The project is expected to kick off early in the summer and be completed by the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

While ocean-bound cruises took a dive during the pandemic, port authorities are looking forward to their regained popularity with a few cruise ship terminal projects. The Canaveral Port Authority of Cape Canaveral, Florida, will be constructing a new cruise ship terminal to serve two ships and perform site work to increase passenger capacity. The project is expected to begin early in the second quarter and be completed by the end of 2022. See project report. In San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Ports Authority (San Juan) will be reconstructing three cruise ship terminals to each accommodate two ships to support future cruise demand and logistics activity at the port. The projects are expected to be completed in 2022. Click here for a list of related project reports.

Outside of the Great Lakes region, the U.S. Southeast is becoming a hotspot for the manufacture of automobiles and auto parts, and several projects in this sector are expected to kick off in the region in the upcoming quarter. Such projects include Hwashin America Corporation's (Greenville, Alabama) plans to expand an automotive stamping plant for automobile chassis and body components by constructing an 80,000-square-foot building with one or two new stamping presses to increase manufacturing space and plant capacity in Greenville. The project is expected to be completed later this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. Other examples of the region's many upcoming automotive projects include an equipment addition at a brake parts manufacturing plant in LaGrange, Georgia, (see project report) and an SUV and light truck tire manufacturing expansion in Dayton, Tennessee (see project report).
