Vattenfall Plans 400-Megawatt Dantysk Offshore Windfarm Near Germany

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Vattenfall Europe Windkraft GmbH (Hamburg, Germany) is planning to build a 400-megawatt (MW) offshore windfarm 45 kilometers north of Sylt, an island in the North Sea. The Dantysk windfarm will be located at the maritime border between Germany and Denmark. The Vattenfall subsidiary, specialized in the construction and operation of onshore and offshore windfarms, plans to erect 80 wind turbines with a capacity of 5 MW each by the end of 2012. The project's estimated cost is about $900 million.

The towers will have a height of 150 meters each, and the rotors will have a diameter of about 110 meters each. At the moment, the owner is conducting a bidding process for the substation. Engineering firms will be called for tenders at the end of this year. Bids for groundworks, steel construction works and equipment will be launched in 2010. Construction kickoff is planned for January 2011.

Dantysk was developed by the German project company Geo Mbh, which sold the concept to Vattenfall. After finishing the first phase by installing 80 wind turbines, the concept foresees the installation of an additional 220 wind turbines to increase the total capacity to 1,500 MW.

Vattenfall Europe Windkraft GmbH is part of Vattenfalls international Wind Business Unit, which is planning wind projects in Great Britain, Scandinavia and Central Europe. Vattenfall hopes to increase its electricity generation derived from wind power, hydro power and biomass-based power to 30% by 2030.

Germany's wind industry is preparing to enter the offshore wind market with various offshore windfarms. More than 1,500 wind turbine sites in the Baltic and in the North Sea already have been approved, according to Dena, the German Energy Agency. The first windfarm to be constructed is Alpha Ventus. The windfarm, which suffered a one-year delay in construction, will have 12 turbines and a capacity of about 60 MW.
