Vernon Municipal Light Begins Operation of $80 Million Malburg Generating Station in California

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Vernon Municipal Light Department (Vernon, California) has reached commercial start-up of the Malburg Generating Station (MGS) project located next to the company’s existing generating plant in Vernon, Los Angeles County, California. Construction for the MGS combined-cycle project began in September 2003 and reached commercial start-up on October 17th.

The natural gas-fired unit consists of two 43-megawatt Siemens SGT-800 (formerly Alstom GTX100) natural gas-fired combustion turbine generators equipped with dry low-NOx (DLN) combustors for oxides of nitrogen (NOx) control. The units will also have evaporative inlet air coolers to enhance turbine performance in hot weather. The hot exhaust gases from the combustion turbine generators will be directed to parallel heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) equipped with duct burners and selective catalytic reduction modules to further reduce NOx. The steam generated by the HRSGs will be used to drive a single 50-megawatt Siemens (formally Alstom MP24) condensing steam turbine generator. The power generated will be distributed through the existing 69kV Vernon Substation. Naural gas for the project is provided via the city’s high-pressure system and will utilize reclaimed water for its operation.

The MGS Project will provide low-cost base load energy for customers in Vernon and will also provide ancillary services that currently are procured on a daily basis through the California Independent System Operator. Ancillary reserves consist of regulating capacity and operating reserve capacity.

The engineering contract was awarded to Power Engineers, Incorporated (Hailey, Idaho) and the general construction contract was awarded to University-Marelich Mechanical (UMM) (Anaheim, California).
