Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Voith GmbH and Company (Heidenheim, Germany), a global provider of mechanical engineering services, is involved in nearly $12 billion worth of active projects, according to Industrial Info's project database. The projects are spread across five continents and include about $1.54 billion worth that are set to begin construction and $4.47 billion worth that are set to finish construction in 2018.

More than $10 billion of the active projects are found in the Power Industry, where Voith is a leading contractor in the market for hydropower generation. About 25% of these projects can be found in the U.S. and Canada, one of the largest of which is New York Power Authority's (White Plains, New York) $230 million refurbishment of a pumped-storage plant in Lewiston, New York. The authority plans to refurbish six Francis reversible turbines, each with a 20-megawatt (MW) capacity, to improve efficiency and extend the service life at the facility. The overhaul kicked off in late 2015 and is expected to wrap up in 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Another years-long project under construction is Western Minnesota Municipal Power Agency's (Ortonville, Minnesota) $224 million addition to the Red Rock Lake & Dam Hydro plant in Knoxville, Iowa, where Voith is adding a pair of turbines to boost capacity by 36.4 MW. The developers expect it to be operational in mid-2019 and generate enough energy to meet the needs of about 18,000 homes. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

At existing hydroelectric facilities across the U.S., Voith is replacing and upgrading turbines to keep the power generation going for years to come. Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) contracted Voith for two such projects: the $200 million turbine upgrades on units 1 to 4 at the Bad Creek Pump Storage Power Station in Salem, South Carolina, and the $152 million uprates and modernizations of units 1 to 3 at the Markland Hydro Station in Florence, Indiana.

The Bad Creek project, which will kick off next spring, is expected to replace four reversible pump turbine runners and rewind four generators to increase capacity by 200 MW; the Markland project, which began last year, is expected to add 9 MW through improvements. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Bad Creek and Markham projects.

Voith also is at work on a pair of modernization projects for the Tennessee Valley Authority (Knoxville, Tennessee): the $65 million modernization of units 1 to 4 at Fort Loudoun Hydro Station in Lenoir City, Tennessee, and the $60 million modernization of units 3 and 4 at Nickajack Hydro Station in Jasper, Tennessee. The projects are part of a broader, 10-year effort by the TVA to build or refurbish its generation and transmission assets, improve its environmental standards, and reduce coal-fired generation. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Fort Loudoun and Nickajack projects, and February 12, 2018, article - End is in Sight for TVA's 10-Year, $10 Billion Capital and Maintenance Plan.

Voith also has a strong presence in the global Pulp, Paper & Wood Industry, where it is involved in nearly $2 billion in active projects. The largest of these include BillerudKorsnas AB's (Stockholm, Sweden) $827.6 million unit addition at a boxboard mill in Gruvon, Sweden. The new unit will produce 500,000 tons per year of boxboard, expanding the facility's capacity to 1.19 million tons per year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
