Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE:WY) (Federal Way, Washington) will commence construction later this month on a multi-million dollar expansion of a woodyard at a pulp and paper mill in Columbus, Mississippi. The company's board approved a project that would essentially see the installation of a new woodyard to process tree-length logs and increase roundwood capacity. In addition to increasing roundwood storage, the mill will benefit from the project through lower operating and energy cost and producing higher quality chips. Construction will begin on April 20, and the new woodyard is expected to be fully operational by April 2006.
Operations at the Columbus complex began in 1982. The mill employs 700 workers and produces approximately 550 tons per day of lightweight coated papers and 1,000 tons per day of bleached softwood kraft and paper grade market pulp. In Mississippi, Weyerhaeuser operates the Columbus mill, box plants at Jackson, Olive Branch, and Magnolia, and lumber mills at McComb, Bruce, and Philadelphia.
