WPD Finland Prepares for the Suurhiekka Offshore Windfarm

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--WPD GmbH & Company KG (Bremen, Germany) is preparing to construct a large wind power station in Finland through its local branch WPD Finland Oy (Espoo, Finland). WPD, founded in 1996, is one of Europe's leading wind power industry participants and has completed 2 gigawatts (GW) worth of projects in Europe and Asia.

Regarding the new power station, WPD Finland, which has been active in the Finnish wind market since 2006, has finished negotiations for licensing agreements with landowners and has performed environmental impact studies. When approval and permits are granted, request for quotations and bid documents will be released starting in January.

The Suurhiekka Offshore Wind Park is to be on 5,900 hectacres in the Gulf of Bothnia. Construction is scheduled to commence during the first quarter of 2013 and will involve the installation of 80 pylons, with turbines capable of producing 5 megawatts (MW) each for a production capacity of 400 MW. When complete late in 2014, the Suurhiekka Offshore Wind Park is expected to produce 1,500 gigawatt-hours (GWh) to provide power to 300,000 non-electrically heated homes.

Finland has an annual electricity consumption of 90 terawatt-hours, with an average household consuming about 5 megawatt-hours per year. Currently, due to law regarding feed-in tariffs, the private sector is primarily responsible for the promotion of renewable energy. At the end of last year, Finland boasted a low 147 MW of installed wind-generated electricity. When operational, WPD Finland's new offshore wind park will see to about 0.75% to Finland's annual power consumption.
