China Finds Large Nickel Deposit in Xinjiang and an Aluminum Deposit in Shanxi

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- China has found a large nickel ore deposit in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and an aluminum deposit in Shanxi Province. Local factories are ready to exploit the minerals. In Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Hami District local authorities announced earlier this month that a nickel ore deposit with a forecasted deposit of 15 million tons was found in the district. The proven deposit, about 900,000 tons, distributes in six mining areas: Huangshan, Huangshan East, Xiangshan, Tudun, Tuwu and Tulagen mining areas. Hami is located in northeast Xinjiang. The area is rich for various mineral deposits, including coal, iron, copper, nickel and gold. Xinjiang’s companies are building new factories or expanding existing ones to process the ores.

Jinchuan Nickel Mine, in Jinchuan City of Gansu Province, is China's largest nickel deposit and the second largest in the world. In 2004, China produced 60,000 tons of nickel, but consumed 145,000 tons. In the first five months of 2007, China has imported 5.49 million tons of nickel ores. In Shanxi Province, local authorities announced earlier this month that they had found a 140 million-ton (forecasted amount) bauxite deposit in Baode County, a 37 million-ton (forecasted amount) bauxite deposit in Xing County, and several other deposits. Shanxi's bauxite deposits mainly lie in Luliang City and Xinzhou City, accounting for 43.8% and 20.1% of Shanxi's total deposit, respectively.

According to a file issued by the Shanxi provincial government, Shanxi has 1.027 billion tons of proven bauxite deposits and 557 million tons of forecasted deposits. The total amount accounts for 40% of all bauxite deposits in China.

Shanxi also plans to build four aluminum oxide processing factories before 2010, each producing 1.8 million tons of product every year. From 2011 to 2020, Shanxi will build two more factories to produce 1.8 million tons per year each.
