Zhikong Hydropower Station Begins Operation in Tibet

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Zhikong Hydropower Station, furnished with the largest unit in Tibet, began official operation on September 23, 2007, which will help to alleviate the power shortage in the central and eastern regions of Tibet during the fall and winter.

The Zhikong Hydropower station in Mozhugongka county, about 96 kilometers from Lhasa, is one of the most important energy construction projects in the Tibet Autonomous Region and is also the largest single-unit hydropower station in Tibet. The station’s construction began in October 2002. It has four vertical Francis turbine-generating units and an advanced computer control system based on the principle of unmanned operation, although some workers will still keep watch. The station’s total installed capacity is 100 megawatts (MW) with an annual average power output 407 million kilowatt-hours. The power station’s main function is for peak and frequency regulation in the grid with benefits in irrigation and flood control.

Served as the second supportive power source in the Tibet’s central grid, along with the Yonghu pump-storage station operated earlier in Yangzhuo, the power station could alleviate the power shortage in economic centers, such as the Lhasha, Shannan, Shigatse, Naqu and Linzhi regions, as well as secure the power supply for the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. The power station could also provide pumping power supply for the Yanghu Power Station to maintain the biological balance in Yanghu Lake. The Zhikong Hydropower Station has a total reservoir storage capacity of 225 million cubic meters, which could improve the flood control standard of Lhasa.

Upon completion of the Zhikong station, another hydropower station in Tibet, the Laohuzui Hydropower Station, is expected to start construction soon. Several clean energies, such as hydropower, wind power and solar energy, are receiving equal development in Tibet.
