Chinese Copper Firm Finishes Expansion Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Jiangxi Copper Corporation finished its 300,000-tons-per-annum (TPA) copper smelting project, raising the company's capacity to 700,000 TPA.

The new refinery is in Guixi City of Jiangxi Province, where Jiangxi Copper's headquarters is located. The factory’s construction, which started in December of last year, cost $460.5 million.

The factory uses Outokumpu technologies in its smelting system, including a flash smelting furnace, recovery, anode furnace and other equipment. In its sulfuric acid system, Jiangxi Copper uses Monsanto's DynaWave technology in acid-making with gas from copper smelting. Its converter can process 260 tons to 280 tons of matte at a time, 40% higher than its previous capacity. Besides advanced equipments, nearly 80% of all equipment is made in China.

Jiangxi Copper has also spent $41.4 million in environmental protects, accounting for 8.48% of investments into the project. Through new techniques, the Guixi factory has an enhanced system of recycling SO2, making the emission of 700,000 tons of capacity lower than400,000 tons of capacity. The factory also recycles 96% of its water.

Established in 1979 and reformed in 1997, Jiangxi Copper Corporation is a large and modern state-owned enterprise specializing in mining, dressing, smelting and the processing of copper and ore. It also produces cathode copper, gold, silver, sulfuric acid, sulfur concentrate and rare and noble metals.

According to its plan, Jiangxi Copper will produce 800,000 tons of cathode copper, 600,000 tons of copper products, 250,000 tons of gold and 5 million tons of silver every year from 2010. The Guixi factory helps Jiangxi Copper to rank among the world's top three.

As China's largest copper production base and an important gold and silver production base, Jiangxi Copper exports products to the U.S., Japan, Europe and South Asia.
