Plymouth Energy Holds Grand Opening of Ethanol Plant in Merrill, Iowa

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Plymouth Energy Company (Merrill, Iowa), an investor-owned start-up ethanol venture, held the grand opening of a state-of-the-art 50 million gallon-per-year-plant in Merrill, Iowa. The plant officially went online on December 8, 2008, and commissioning and start-up went smoothly. The facility has been running at nameplate capacity since May 1 and is now producing 150,000 gallons of fuel ethanol daily.

The plant broke ground in October 2006 and was built by Agra Industries (Merrill, Wisconsin), utilizing Delta-T Corporation (Williamsburg, Virginia) licensed ethanol process technology. For more information, see October 12, 2006, news article - Plymouth Energy Breaks Ground on Fuel Ethanol Plant in Iowa.

The Merrill plant is located just north of town off of Highway K42 on a 57-acre site, with rail service from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (NYSE:BNI) (Fort Worth, Texas). The facility will require more than 19 million bushels of corn annually to reach the 50 million-gallon-per-year nameplate capacity. It also will generate 175,000 tons of distillers dried grains annually. Plant officials said the plant has been profitable for the past two months and were not experiencing tight margins like other facilities.

Costs to build the plant were in the $97 million range, and the plant has been designed to accommodate a potential expansion to 100 million gallons when the ethanol market improves.
