Phoenix Cement Nears Completion of $115 Million Expansion

Phoenix Cement Company (Clarksdale, Az.), a privately held company, is in full construction phase on a plant expansion at its Clarksdale, Arizona cement plant. The expansion, which will boost capacity at the plant up to one million tons annually, includes a new kiln line replacing three existing less efficient rotary kilns.

The new equipment, designed by FL Smidth (Bethlehem, Pa.), also includes a five stage preheater/precalciner, storage dome, raw and finish mills. The general contractor for the project is Zachry Construction Company Corporation, a subsidiary of HB Zachry Company (San Antonio, Tx.). Construction on the project is 53% complete and most subcontracts have been let. Mechanical completion is scheduled for August 12, 2002 with start-up to follow.
