Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Brazilian pulp producer Jari Celulose S.A. (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is conducting feasibility studies for the addition of a biomass-fired steam boiler at the company's existing mill in Monte Dourado (Para, Brazil). These studies will determine the company's opportunity to proceed with the expansion of its power plant. The total investment cost of the project is estimated at about $10 million.
The boiler, which is to be installed at the Jari pulp plant, will replace a current 856-ton-steam-per-hour black liquor boiler, and would reduce CO2 emissions by 250,000 tons per year. It has not been specified who will design, supply and install the biomass boiler. However, infrastructure construction is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2012 and is expected to last two and a half years. The mill is bound to begin operations in the second quarter of 2014.
Located in the city of El Dourado, in Para, the Jari pulp facility was built in 1979. It has a production capacity of 410,000 tons of Kraft pulp per year. The plant is equipped with a 55 megawatt Toshiba steam turbine and two 140-ton-per-hour biomass-fired boilers. The energy produced is used for the mill's self consumption. At present, approximately 250 people work at the plant.
Jari Celulose S.A. is a company that produces and commercializes Kraft softwood pulp and Unbleached pulp. Located in Rio de Janiero, the company has two operating mills in Brazil and exports products throughout Latin America.
