Peru Ministry to Construct 1,500-Megawatt Combined-Cycle Power Plant in Moquegua

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Peru's Ministerio de Energia y Minas (Lima, Peru) plans to construct a 1,500-megawatt (MW) thermoelectric power plant in Ilo, in the Perubian Moquegua province. The project's investment is estimated to be $1.05 million, and construction is expected to begin in 2015.

The development is in the very early stages, and its configuration is projected to involve two 2-on-1 combined-cycle blocks, with a total output capacity of 1,500 MW. Each block will be composed of two 250-MW natural gas-fired, combined-cycle combustion turbines and a 250-MW combined-cycle steam turbine. The company aims to provide energy to the northern part of Chile, mainly to the operating mines of the neighboring country.

In order to transport natural gas, the project requires the construction of a 1,085-kilometer pipeline at an investment of $1.5 billion. The pipeline will begin in the Camisea area, and will cross the regions of Cusco, Arequipa, Puno and Moquegua, and connect to Ilo.

The ministry is working on the project design, and tenders soon will be launched for the design and construction. Plant officials told Industrial Info that construction would take about three years, starting in 2015.
