Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction is set to start on Japan's largest solar photovoltaic (PV) project. The 115-megawatt Eurus Rokkasho Solar Park is sited in Aomori prefecture and requires an investment of more than $500 million. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015.
The project will use 510,000 panels of single crystal silicon PV cells manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (Tokyo) and SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ:SPWR) (San Jose, California). The park will generate enough electricity to power 38,000 average Japanese households a year and will mitigate the annual production of 70,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
The plant will be located on two sites in the Mutsu-Ogawara industrial park in Rokkash village and will cover a total of 253 hectares. The industrial park covers 5,300 hectares and includes an area used for emergency crude petroleum tanks. It is situated in the north of Japan, where the average annual temperature is about 10 degrees Celsius.
Eurus Energy (Tokyo) is Japan's largest wind power developer and is a joint venture of Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) (Tokyo) and Toyota Tsusho Corporation (Nagoya). The company has a total global installed power capacity of about 2,000 MW.
