Gray Construction at Work on $9.5 Billion Worth of Projects

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Gray Construction (Lexington, Kentucky) is a leading U.S. design-build firm, with a number of projects under its belt. Industrial Info is tracking $9.5 billion worth of active projects involving Gray, which cover a variety of industries, including Food & Beverage, Industrial Manufacturing and Metals & Minerals.

Pet ownership escalated in the U.S. during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and pet food companies such as Nestle Purina PetCare Company (Saint Louis, Missouri) have become some of the strongest investors in the U.S. Food & Beverage Industry as they expand their production. So Gray Construction did well when it won two lucrative contracts from Nestle Purina for facilities in Williamsburg, Ohio, and Eden, North Carolina.

According to a Nestle Purina press release, the grassroot Williamsburg facility is the company's first new factory built from the ground up since 1975. The 1.2 million-square-foot facility will produce pet foods such as Purina Pro Plan, Purina ONE and Dog Chow. Gray is performing design-build services on the project, construction of which kicked off in late 2020 and is expected to be completed next year. In Eden, North Carolina, near the Virginia border, Gray is converting a former brewery into a pet food production facility for Nestle Purina. The 1.3 million-square-foot plant is expected to begin operating in mid-2023 and employ more than 300 people by 2024. The facility is being designed with a commitment to send zero waste for disposal, and production processes designed to recover and reuse heat and water. Other companies on a construction tear in the U.S. include e-commerce, streaming and data services giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington). In Detroit, Michigan, Gray is providing Amazon with general contracting services for a brownfield distribution center. The facility is being built on a section of the former Michigan State Fairgrounds and will have four stories with 3.8 million square feet. Construction kicked off in late 2020 and is expected to wrap up later this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for the report. Gray is at work on another Amazon project in Michigan and an Amazon data center Oregon. Subscribers can click here for those project reports.

Gray has shown its capabilities in construction of refrigerated distribution centers for the restaurant and grocery sectors. Examples include Publix Super Markets Incorporated's (Lakeland, Florida) grassroot facility in Greensboro, North Carolina. Phase I includes a 1.1 million-square-foot refrigerated warehouse, and Phase II, already under construction, includes a dry storage warehouse, additional refrigerated space and a food-manufacturing plant. Both phases are expected to be completed this year. Subscribers can click here for the report on Phase I and here for Phase II.

Gray also is gaining increased exposure in the Metals & Minerals Industry with a couple of projects, including the expansion of gypsum wallboard manufacturing plant in Sweetwater, Texas, for Georgia-Pacific Building Products (Atlanta, Georgia). The project is being built near an existing wallboard plant, and the new facility will increase production capacity by 680 million to 700 million square feet per year, bringing Georgia-Pacific's total manufacturing capacity at the site to about 1 billion square feet per year of gypsum products. The project is expected to be completed later this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Metals & Minerals Project Database can click here for the report.

In Mobile, Alabama, Gray is wrapping up a shipbuilding manufacturing facility expansion for Australian shipbuilder Austal (Henderson). The project kicked off last summer and entails constructing new build sheds of approximately 156,000 square feet to produce steel ships. The facility currently specializes in aluminum ships. The move is intended to allow Austal to produce mid-sized steel ships for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. Subscribers can click here for the detailed report.
