Released March 20, 2024 | GALWAY, IRELAND

Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--French renewable hydrogen pioneer Lhyfe (Nantes, France) has announced two green-hydrogen plant projects in the U.K. and Germany.

The company has revealed plans for its first project in the U.K., a 20-megawatt (MW) project to be located on the brownfield site of the historic Neptune Bank Power Station in Wallsend, North Tyneside, in the U.K.'s industrial northeast. It will be capable of producing up to 8 tonnes of green hydrogen per day, which it will supply to local companies seeking to decarbonise their manufacturing and transport operations. The France-based multinational's first plant in Pays de la Loire, western France, has been operational since the second half of 2021, with two more sites inaugurated in the Occitanie and Brittany regions in December 2023.

"We are excited to announce North Tyneside as the site for our first UK green hydrogen production project," said Taia Kronborg, chief business officer at Lhyfe. "The development of green hydrogen projects is critical if major energy users are to decarbonise their operations. We hope this project will not only help the North East but the whole of the U.K. reach its net zero targets." The plant will initially use electricity from the grid, complying with the U.K. Low Carbon Hydrogen Standard. The company is also exploring options to source power from local renewable assets, such as solar and wind.

In Germany, the company has started work on a 10-MW hydrogen production plant in Brake in Lower Saxony. Located on land in the harbor area of Niedersachsen Ports, the largest public seaport operator in Germany, it will be the first in the northern German region to make green hydrogen available to the wider market. The plant will produce up to 4 tonnes of green hydrogen per day. It was welcomed by Lower Saxony Economics Minister, Olaf Lies, who said: "Today's groundbreaking ceremony is a great success for the energy transition in our coastal region: it not only marks significant progress towards a sustainable energy supply, but also a clear commitment to regional value creation and decarbonisation. The port location of Brake offers ideal conditions for the production of renewable hydrogen. It is an example of successful collaboration on the path to a comprehensive and sustainable transformation of our energy system."

Last October, Industrial Info reported that Lhyfe had begun work on its first German green hydrogen plant at Schwäbisch Gmünd, the largest in the Baden-Württemberg region and the company's largest production plant outside of France. With an installed capacity of 10 MW, it will be capable of producing up to 4 tonnes per day of green hydrogen when commissioned in the second half of 2024.
