Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE:ADM) (ADM) (Decatur, Illinois) continues to grow its biofuels business with the acquisition of the shuttered Prairie Pride LLC production facility in Nevada, Missouri.
Prairie Pride struggled financially with the loss of the $1-per-gallon tax credit in January 2010 and ceased production in February of that year. The plant began production in June 2008 and produced biodiesel for slightly more than a year and a half before stopping operations.
ADM expects to begin hiring employees soon, and production is likely to restart in about 60 days. The plant is a combination soybean crushing and biodiesel production facility that crushes 20 million bushels of soybeans each year, producing 30 million gallons of biodiesel. The original Prairie Pride members will retain majority ownership of the biodiesel plant, but not the crush plant.
ADM has been growing its biofuels business through acquisitions and has the potential to produce more than 1.6 billion gallons of ethanol and 115 million gallons of biodiesel domestically with plants in Missouri and North Dakota. ADM also has a biodiesel production facility in Rondonopolios, Brazil, which produces 565,000 liters per day. The company plans to construct another facility in Joacaba, Brazil, with a planned production capacity of 164,000 tons per year of biodiesel.
