Aisin Seiki Tags Marion Illinois for Electronics Plant

The $14 million, 58,000 square foot manufacturing facility will employ 120 workers

Released Thursday, July 15, 2004

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Aisin Seiki Company Limited (Kariya, Aichi, Japan), through its U.S. subsidiary, Aisin Holdings of America (Lombard, Illinois), will build a third plant in Marion, Illinois, just north of one of Aisin's existing plants, at 11200 Redco Drive in Redco Industrial Park. The new company, formed April 14, 2004, will be known as Aisin Electronics Illinois LLC. The $14 million, 58,000 square foot manufacturing facility will employ 120 workers. Aisin expects $45 million in annual revenues by 2008.

Zeller Construction of Marion, Illinois, in conjunction with Doster Construction of Franklin, Tennessee, which built the existing Aisin plants in Marion, will act as general contractor for the new building. The project has already been permitted, and footers are being laid out at this time. Concrete work and rebar contracts have not gone out yet, but should by August 1.

Electrical and mechanical RFQ's should be released in mid-July. Burke Electric (Murphysboro, Illinois) is a good bet from the short-list of electrical contractors, as Burke has done a lot of work for Aisin in the past. Other contenders are Martin Electric (Johnston City, Illinois), Sullivan Electric (Marion, Illinois), and Newton Electric (Marion, Illinois).

The mechanical short-list includes Rend Lake Plumbing & Heating (Benton, Illinois), Litton Enterprises (Marion, Illinois), and Quality Sheet Metal (Carbondale, Illinois).

The new plant will make electronic parts to be used by its sister plant at 11000 Redco Drive in the sunroofs and sliding doors it makes for the GM Hummer H2 and various Toyota vehicles. Aisin already has two electronics plants in Stockton, California (Aisin Electronics Incorporated and Handa Electronics), but the new plant will be nearer GM and Toyota plants in Kentucky, Indiana, and Canada, as well as Nissan's Smyrna, Tennessee, plant.

Aisin Seiki, together with its several joint venture operations, is a major player in the global automotive industry. Its U.S. interests manufacture drivetrain-related products (Crothersville, Indiana; Durham, North Carolina), brake and chassis-related products (Terre Haute, Indiana; Lebanon, Ohio; LaGrange, Georgia), body-related products (Seymour, Indiana; Marion, Illinois; Woodstock, Ontario), engine-related products (Mascot, Tennessee); casting operations (Clinton, Tennessee; London, Kentucky); and electronics-related products (Stockton, California; Marion, Illinois), as well as two plants in Mexico. The company is also planning to construct a new plant in Mexico, concurrently with the Marion plant, near the Nissan assembly plant in Aguascalientes. The new Mexican plant is expected to begin production of doorframes for Nissan's popular Sentra vehicle in 2005. Aisin supplies automotive parts and systems to virtually all automotive OEMs, as well as a number of Tier suppliers.
