Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info's North American Industrial Project Database shows about $8 billion in Power Industry projects that are under consideration in Alaska. The following are highlights of some of the new-generation projects being evaluated in the state; for more information on maintenance, refurbishments, environmental projects and modernizations, customers should consult the Industrial Info Power Project Database.

Accounting for more than half of the total investment value of proposed power projects in Alaska, the single most expensive energy project under consideration is Alaska Energy Authority's (AEA) (Anchorage, Alaska) Susitna-Watana Hydro Project. With an estimated cost of between $4.5 billion and $5.5 billion, it features a 735-foot dam, a 24,000-acre reservoir, and a powerhouse capable of generating 2.8 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of annual energy from an installed capacity of 600 megawatts (MW). The energy is designed to be delivered by three 200-MW vertical Francis hydroelectric turbine generators. AEA is anticipating submitting a license application in 2015, but the project is not expected to be brought online before 2024.

Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:ABX) (Anchorage) and NovaGold (Vancouver, British Columbia) are joint owners of Donlin Gold, which is responsible for the proposed $6.7 billion Donlin Creek Gold Project. Part of this project is a natural gas-fired power plant with an estimated cost of $1.7 billion. In order to provide fuel for the plant, it will be necessary to construct a 312-mile underground natural gas pipeline from the Cook Inlet Gas Plant to a planned, on-site, combined-cycle, natural gas-fired power plant with a 150-MW capacity.

The plant would provide energy and steam for the gold mine and mill. It is expected to consist of two 15-MW steam turbines and four 30-MW gas turbines, fitted with heat-recovery steam generators (HRSGs). Permitting for this project likely is more than two years away, and construction is not expected to begin before April 2017.

While these two projects take up the lion's share of the investment value of Alaska's planned projects, there are 21 other projects that are of potential interest to Industrial Info's clients. In regards to our previous series of articles on coal-fired power plants and the EPA's carbon rules, one project that is worthy of some extra attention is the restart of Unit 2 at the Healy Clean Coal Project (HCCP). The project aims to restart a pulverized coal-fired Foster Wheeler boiler that is attached to a Fuji steam turbine generator to provide up to 50 MW of generating capacity. The Healy Power Station is owned by Golden Valley Electric Association Incorporated (GEVA) (Fairbanks, Alaska).
