Alliant Energy Aims to Have 10% of Power from Wind

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Alliant Energy (NYSE:LNT) (Madison, Wisconsin), which generates more than 31 million megawatt-hours of power per year for more than 1.4 million customers in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin, has big plans to increase the amount of renewable energy generated by the company. Chairman, President and CEO Bill Harvey spoke at a recent shareholder's meeting about the company's future plans for wind power. "Our wind projects are moving full speed ahead, and by the end of 2009, we expect to get over 10% of our retail energy supply from wind," said Harvey. "In addition, we have over 500 megawatts of available capacity at our existing wind sites to meet any increased future renewable energy requirements."

Industrial Info is currently monitoring more than $2.7 billion of Alliant's projects in the U.S. Included in these are two windfarm projects with a combined estimated total investment value of $800 million. Both projects are very similar in scope and nature, involving the installation of 121-122 Vestas (CPH:VWS) (Randers, Denmark) wind turbine-generators with generating capacities of 1.65 megawatts (MW) each, giving each windfarm a nameplate capacity of about 200 MW.

Construction is already under way at the Whispering Willow Windfarm near Bradford, Iowa, while the Bent Tree Windfarm in Albert Lea, Minnesota, is scheduled to begin construction in November of this year. Both windfarms are scheduled to be completed in 2010.
