Argentine & European Officials Meet to Discuss Mining Cooperation

Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Argentina's minister of mines and several governors have traveled to Europe to attract further interest to the nation's mining industry.

Flavia Royon, Argentina's minister of mines, and several governors from the nation's lithium- and copper-rich provinces have traveled to Europe to incentivize investments in the country's growing mining industry.

Over the weekend, the Argentine delegation presented several mining and renewable energy development opportunities to German officials. Among the German staff present was Christian Forwick, the secretary of commerce from the Ministry of Economy and Climate Action.

On Monday, the Argentine delegation met European Union (EU) officials in charge of relations with Latin America to encourage mineral mining development.

The presence of the province governors is key, given that Argentina's mining law is shaped regionally, rather than nationally. The provinces have the power to grant mining rights and concessions.

Through these meetings, Argentina wants to "promote provincial strategic priorities and attract European investments in critical minerals and energy resources in order to integrate value chains between Argentine and European industry."

In June 2023, the EU and Argentina signed a bilateral agreement to identify new projects and opportunities that promote the extraction of critical minerals for the transition to cleaner energies, such as lithium and copper.

This followed the EU's need for raw material suppliers as it sped up the transition to renewable energy and electric vehicles following the war in Ukraine.

For its part, in the last few years, the South American country has been trying to promote its mining sector, especially for lithium and copper. Unlike its neighbors Chile and Bolivia, which also have massive lithium resources, Argentina has maintained a more business-friendly environment, further attracting companies' interests.

Argentina currently has three operating lithium mining projects in the country, with the possibility of more coming online in the next few years. The story is similar for copper, with Glencore International AG (Baar, Switzerland) developing the Mara and El Pachón projects. In January, Royon told radio station Profesional FM, "This government sees great potential in mining. We have the challenge of completing the lithium projects that are under construction and can begin exporting. Argentina has seven copper projects in an advanced stage. Today, Argentina does not have copper production, so it is clearly one of the great challenges and one of those that will change the reality of the mining provinces," Royón told Profesional FM in January.
