Australia's Muja Coal-Fired Power Station Prepares for Major Shutdowns

Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--State-owned energy provider Synergy (Perth, Australia) is preparing for major maintenance outages at its Muja coal-fired power plant in Australia. The two maintenance outages are scheduled to begin in the second and third quarters of 2014.

The major maintenance shutdown of the 200-megawatt (MW) Unit D7 at Muja is due to begin in June. Following its completion, Synergy will perform a similar outage on Unit D8 in September. Sources at the plant have confirmed that the outage will involve repairs and inspections to the 200-MW Parsons reheat condensing steam turbine, and the 2,379-pound-per-square-inch (PSIG) Omnical supercritical coal-fired boiler.

The maintenance outages on each unit will last for six weeks. Synergy's in-house maintenance team will carry out the maintenance on the balance of plant equipment, while Transfield Worley Power Services Pty Limited (North Sydney, Australia) will act as a major contractor. Transfield has signed a nine-year service agreement to conduct maintenance at the Muja plant.

The 974-MW Muja plant, which is 22 kilometers east of Collie, Western Australia, began operations in 1966 with two 120-MW units. The plant features eight steam turbines, which were built in four stages during 1968 and 1985, with each stage comprising two units. Synergy mothballed the four units at A&B stations in 2010, and performed major refurbishment in association with Inalco Energy as a joint venture partner. The $335 million refurbishment project was heavily funded by the state government. Synergy completed refurbishment of two units at Muja B in the first quarter of 2013.

However, the refurbishment of the other two units, 1 and 2, was halted in June 2013 due to commercial factors. The refurbishment resumed by end of 2013, and was completed in 2014.
