Austrian Company Plans 400-Megawatt Combined-Cycle Power Plant in Austria

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Energie Klagenfurt AG (Klagenfurt, Austria), a joint venture of local energy provider Stadtwerke Klagenfurt (Klagenfurt, Austria) and Verbund AG (Vienna, Austria), plans to construct a 400-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle plant in Klagenfurt, located in the Austrian county of Carinthia. The plant will consist of a combustion turbine, a heat-recovery steam generator and a steam turbine.

The natural-gas-fired power station will replace the Klagenfurt district heating power station, which became operational in 1949 and provides 25,000 households of the region with a total of 28 MW of electricity and 108 MW of heat.

Energie Klagenfurt AG is planning to invest $350 million in the construction of the power station. Once environmental studies are approved, authorities will launch a tender for engineering, equipment, infrastructure and subcontractors. Construction kickoff is planned for June 2011. The plant is scheduled to become operational in December 2013 and will employ about 25 people.

The project was delayed due to objections from local residents because of environmental issues. Like all European countries, Austria must follow precise directions to reduce air pollution. The country's ambitions are to increase electricity generation derived from wind power, hydropower and biomass-based power to 34% by 2020; to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 20%; and to reduce energy consumption by 20%, according to Austria's Federal Environment Agency. At the moment, more than 70% of energy consumed is provided by fossil energy sources. Austria depends on energy imports. About 60% of energy produced in Austria originates from water sources.
