Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The concrete walls of a 1 million-square-foot distribution warehouse that is being built by Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMXN) (Seattle, Washington) are rising along the Broening Highway in Baltimore. Amazon is constructing a $200 million distribution center. The project is one of many in the area that have made Baltimore one of the top metropolitan areas in the Mid-Atlantic region for industrial project activity.
Currently, there are 44 active industrial projects totaling $5.6 billion in Baltimore City and Baltimore County in Maryland, according to Industrial Info's North American Industrial Project Database.
The Industrial Manufacturing Industry accounts for 77% of the project activity in Baltimore, with 17 projects totaling $4.3 billion. There are a host of rail projects in the area; the Maryland Transit Administration alone has more than $3 billion worth of rail projects. Over the next three years, CSX Corporation (NYSE:CSX) will spend $186 million to upgrade and rehabilitate rail infrastructure, including a 1,400-mile, state-wide freight rail system consisting of three rail yards, an intermodal terminal, locomotive shop, coal pier, two TRANSFLO terminals and an automotive distribution center.
The Pharma-Biotech Industry has more than $1 billion worth of projects planned in Baltimore. Emergent Biosolutions Incorporated (NYSE:EBS) (Rockville, Maryland) is planning a $50 million expansion of its flu vaccine production and research & development facility in Baltimore. Construction could begin as early as this spring. Last year, Emergent was beneficiary to a federal research grant as part of a $220 million program of the Department of Health and Human Services to create three flu vaccine production facilities in the U.S.
