Barrick Gold Starts Up World's Highest-Altitude Wind Turbine in Argentina

The turbine is located in the province of San Juan almost 4,200 meters above sea level. The wind generator is a D8.2 model supplied by British SeaWind and manufactured by the Germany's DeWind with a maximum capacity of 2 megawatts (MW). The D8.2 model is regarded as having the most advanced technology in renewable energy generation and as one of the largest wind turbines currently being manufactured. The turbine's design was developed by Ferdinand Porsche AG (Stuttgart, Germany). The wind generator will be operated remotely from the offices of the manufacturer in Germany.

With a total investment cost of $8.5 million, the wind generator will supply clean and renewable energy to the Veladero open-pit gold mine, which Barrick has been operating since 2005.
