Basin Electric Power Cooperative Completes Construction on $100 Million Culberson Peaking Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Bismarck, North Dakota) has completed construction on a $100 million, 95-megawatt (MW) peaking station in Culbertson, Montana.

Construction began in the summer of 2009 and was completed this spring. First firing for the new project was successfully completed in June. Basin is scheduled to commence full commercial operation of the facility this month. The project consisted of constructing a simple-cycle peaking station with a natural gas-fired 95-MW GE Energy (NYSE:GE) LMS100 combustion turbine generator. Culberson will operate when energy demand is highest, which is during the summer and winter months for Basin Electric customers.

Dakota Gasification Company (Beulah, North Dakota), which is a subsidiary of Basin Electric, will supply the natural gas needed to run the facility. Dry Prairie Rural Water will meet the water requirements of the facility.

CH2MHill (Englewood, Colorado) was engineer on the project. The Industrial Company (TIC) (Casper, Wyoming) was general contractor.
