Basin Electric Prepares to Start Construction on 422-Megawatt Dry Fork Power Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) – Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Bismarck, North Dakota) is preparing to start construction on the $800 million, 422-megawatt (MW) coal-fired Dry Fork Power Station located outside of Gillette, Wyoming.

Basin Electric has selected Sargent & Lundy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) to oversee the engineering and construction of the facility. Sargent & Lundy has already contracted several aspects of the project, while several contracts such as electrical, structural, and mechanical are still pending engineering and design phases. The boiler system components and construction have been contracted to Babcock & Wilcox (B&W), a subsidiary of Babcock Power (Danvers, Massachusetts). The Dry Fork facility will operate as a base load plant utilizing state-of-the art emissions reduction equipment. This equipment is being supplied by Nooter/Erickson (Fenton, Missouri) and built by Titan Construction (Bowling Green, Kentucky). The air cooler and condenser portion of this project is being supplied by GEA Thermal Dynamic Towers (Lakewood, Colorado) and constructed by LPR Construction (Loveland, Colorado). Ames Construction (Aurora, Colorado) and The Industrial Company (TIC) (Steamboat Springs, Colorado) are two of the companies currently bidding on the civil and foundation portion of the project that is scheduled to start this fall.

The station will consist of a 422 MW Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) steam turbine/generator set with a B&W pulverized-coal sub critical boiler set. The plant will utilize Powder River Basin (PRB) coal, a low sulfur subbituminous coal currently being mined in the Gillette area. The Dry Fork Project is expected to start commercial operations in the first quarter of 2012.

Basin Electric is one of the largest electric generation cooperatives in the nation with 124 members. The co-op generates, transmits, and distributes over 3,500 MW of electricity to a customer base of approximately 2.5 million people in nine states.
