Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held BioProcess Algae LLC (Portsmouth, Rhode Island), with partner Green Plains Renewable Energy Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska), have broken ground on Phase II of a 5-acre algae farm at Green Plains fuel ethanol plant in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Phase I of the project has been running since January 2011, and Phase II will increase the capacity twentyfold. Phase II involves construction of an 8,400-square-foot building, five acres of growing area, and the installation of multiple bioreactors capable of producing 50 to 60 tons of algae per acre annually. The dry end product will be marketed to biodiesel manufactures with the technology for producing the renewable fuel. By-products of production include high quality animal feed, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceuticals from algae feedstocks.
The installation of building foundations and water preparation system already has begun for the estimated $5 million project. The process will utilize the by-product of ethanol production--carbon dioxide from the 65 million-gallon-per-year fuel ethanol plant fermentation system--to feed multiple horizontal algae bioreactors.
If the process is commercially successful, the company has said it intends to launch algae-growing farms at other plants, including the company's existing fuel ethanol plants in Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana and Tennessee.
The Shenandoah algae project is expected to be fully operational by July or August 2012.
