Blue Flint Ethanol Scheduling North Dakota Ethanol Plant Start-Up for Early February

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Blue Flint Ethanol, LLC (Underwood, North Dakota), a joint venture between Headwaters, Incorporated (NYSE:HW ) (South Jordan, Utah), and electric utility company Great River Energy (Elk River, Minnesota), is scheduling February 8, 2007, as the start-up date for a new fuel ethanol plant that is currently wrapping up construction in Underwood, North Dakota. Construction began on the estimated $65 million plant in November of 2005 under the direction of Fagen, Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota), and the licensed process technology design was performed by ICM, Incorporated (Colwich, Kansas). The plant will process 18 million bushels of locally grown corn annually into 50 million gallons per year of fuel ethanol and distillers dried grains.

The plant is also unique in its design as it does not incorporate any steam boilers on-site. Waste heat process steam will be piped over to the plant from an existing coal-fired power plant next door to the ethanol plant. The power plant is owned and operated by Great River Energy, a minority owner of the project.

A grand opening ceremony is planned for May 31, 2007.

Once the plant goes into operation, Blue Flint will be the fourth plant operating in North Dakota bringing the state’s total ethanol production capacity to just over 135 million gallons annually. Once an additional ethanol plant that is currently under construction in North Dakota for U.S. BioEnergy Hankston comes online, the state’s capacity for producing fuel ethanol will grow to over 235 million gallons by the fall of 2007.
